THE STORY OF GAMMELGÅRD
THE STORY OF GAMMELGÅRD
THE OLD NURSING HOUSE, MUNICIPAL HOME AND ELDERLY HOME
Located in Nauvo, the Gammelgård estate, completed in the early 20th century, has previously functioned as an almshouse, a municipal home and a retirement home.
The place was originally a farm called Grannas, which the municipality bought in the 1890s. A poorhouse, “fatigårdn”, was established there. In 1911, it was almost completely destroyed by fire, and there was a break in the operation, when the poor were placed on different farms. The small archipelago municipalities Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskari and Iniö established a joint treatment facility on the site. This worked in Gammelgård’s current main building until the early 90s.
After this, the place was bought by a couple who developed it into a B&B inn and a course and camp center. However, the generational change did not go quite smoothly, and the place was empty for several years before we started to put the places in order.
